    John Bower is a senior partner in a nine-vet small animal hospital in Plymouth. He is a past-president of the BVA and BSAVA, co-author of the book 'Veterinary Practice Management' (1991), published by Blackwells, and a founder member of the Veterinary Practice Management Association.


IT can come as quite a shock to veterinary surgeons after a full university course in the art and science of veterinary surgery and medicine, to learn that business skills are also needed. This article illustrates why the practice budget is one of the most valuable tools of all.
