Somatic cell counts and the new milk market

    Peter Edmondson qualified from Trinity College, Dublin, in 1980. He spent five years in mixed practice in Ireland and two years working for a large dairy company in Saudi Arabia and China before moving to the UK to join a nine-man predominantly dairy practice in Shepton Mallet, Somerset. He holds the RCVS certificate in cattle health and production and was awarded an FRCVS in 1994. His special interest is in mastitis and preventive medicine and he runs mastitis control and quality milk production seminars for dairy practitioners.


MANY changes have occurred in relation to herd somatic cell counts over the past few years, in particular since the demise of the Milk Marketing Board in October 1994. The final stage of EU legislation governing cell counts will be implemented on July 1, 1997.
