Bereavement support: helping others cope with loss
  1. Janet Thomas

Janet Thomas runs a small animal veterinary hospital in Oldham. She is chairperson of the advisory group for the SCAS Pet Loss Befriender Service, runs bereavement support groups and offers individual counselling for clients.

Abstract

A PET loss bereavement group is a valuable service which can be offered by a veterinary practice. Veterinary surgeons, however, receive little training in ‘people care’ and may feel unsure about establishing such a group. In this article, Janet Thomas describes the benefits, and limitations, of a bereavement support group.
