Clinical conditions of pigs in outdoor breeding herds

    Richard Potter qualified from Cambridge veterinary school in 1976 and has been in practice in the Thames Valley since then. He works solely in the pig sector of a large mixed practice, and has a specific interest in pigs kept outdoors. He holds the certificate in pig medicine.


CURRENTLY over 25 per cent of the UK sow population is kept outdoors, compared to around 4 per cent in the early 1980s. The health of outdoor pigs tends to be better than that of their indoor counterparts. Nevertheless, there are a number of problems and diseases that commonly affect the outdoor breeding herd and these are considered in this article.
