The VN S/NVQ Scheme in practice
  1. Caroline Bower

    Caroline Bower is a vet in a 10-person small animal hospital-based practice in Plymouth. She has an interest in and enthusiasm for nurse training and development.

  2. Melanie Simmonds

    Melanie Simmonds qualified as a veterinary nurse in 1992 from Bristol University and gained the diploma in Advanced Veterinary Nursing (Surgical) in 1997. She is head nurse at a small animal hospital in Plymouth, and is the south-west regional external verifier for the veterinary nursing S/NVQ Scheme. She is currently vice-president of the BVNA.


WHEN the system for training student nurses changed to the Scottish/National Vocational Qualification (S/NVQ) Scheme last year, many practices were prompted to look closely at the training they offered. In this article, Caroline Bower and Melanie Simmonds describe their experiences of implementing the new scheme.
