IN 1999, the BVA, in association with NatWest and the Association of Veterinary Students, conducted a survey of veterinary students at the six schools in England and Scotland. Asking questions about, for example, students' secondary education, their financial situation and their thoughts about their veterinary education, the results of the survey illustrate some significant trends within the student population. In this article, Simon Doherty, a final year student at Glasgow, concentrates on the issue of student finances, looking at what levels of debt students accrue during the five-year course, and why.
