Telemedicine - a vision of the future?

    Pip Boydell qualified from the Royal Veterinary College in 1984. After a couple of years in the surgery department at the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies, Edinburgh and in referral practice in London, he completed a residency in ophthalmology at the RVC. He subsequently co-founded the Animal Medical Centre Referral Service in Manchester. He is a member of the Royal Society of Medicine forum of telemedicine. His professional interests include neuroophthalmology and ocular imaging.


IN a recent article (May 2000, pp 280-281), Pip Boydell discussed how developments in information technology are influencing referral work. In this article he goes one step further and describes how developing technology might influence practice, discussing possible developments and potential problems that may occur as 'medicine at a distance' becomes a routine part of practice life.
