Investigation of skin disease and urticaria in the horse

    Sue Paterson qualified from Cambridge in 1984 and gained her certificate in small animal dermatology in 1990. She was the holder of the 1993/94 CSTF/Pet Plan Scholarship during which time she was a dermatology resident at the Animal Health Trust in Newmarket. She gained the RCVS diploma in veterinary dermatology in 1994, and the European diploma in veterinary dermatology in 1996. She is an RCVS Specialist in Veterinary Dermatology and runs a dermatology referral practice in the Manchester and Cheshire area.

Abstract

THE veterinary surgeon is commonly presented with horses with skin disease, the management of which requires a thorough clinical examination and diagnostic work-up. This article outlines the general approach to the investigation of such cases and describes the tests which might aid diagnosis. It also discusses the diagnostic approach to a specific dermatological entity, urticaria.
