2. Diarrhoea of large intestinal origin
AS discussed in Part 1 (In Practice, January 2002, pp 18-24), diarrhoea is described as chronic when it has been present, either constantly or intermittently, for longer than two weeks. A diagnostic approach to chronic diarrhoea of small intestinal origin was set out in that earlier article. This article outlines an approach to the diagnosis of diarrhoea of large intestinal origin before going on to consider a few specific diarrhoeic conditions.
