Looking for a senior position
  1. Chris Stanford

Chris Stanford spent 35 years in the Royal Navy, before embarking on a second career in early 2002. He now heads the Healthcare Practice in Odgers Ray & Berndtson (, currently the second largest headhunters (executive search firm) by turnover in the UK. His job centres on finding people at CEO or director level (including nonexecutives) to work in all areas of the NHS, government departments and agencies, charities, medical education and other areas. In the main, he works in the public and voluntary (not‐forprofit) sector, although the company has practices that cover the entire private and commercial sector from life sciences to financial services.

CHRIS Stanford is a headhunter with personal experience of launching a successful second career. Having reached the position of Rear Admiral in the Royal Navy, he then moved into the very different world of executive recruitment, where he helps vets ‐ among others ‐ find the second career of their choice. Here, he outlines the best way to approach a change of career, how to get the job you want, and why vets ‐ in particular ‐ should feel confident about their abilities to do so.
