Locums learning the ropes
  1. Christine Shield

Christine Shield graduated from Edinburgh in 1983. She works freelance, after having sold the single‐handed small animal practice that she ran for 17 years. She is a past‐president of the SPVS and the North of England Veterinary Association and a council member of the RCVS and BVA.

VETERINARY practices have a great deal in common, but there are also huge differences in the day‐to‐day minutiae of how they run. A locum coming to work in a practice for the first time cannot be expected to have the same familiarity with its procedures as a permanent member of staff. Christine Shield suggests that a little forethought from an employer to help a new locum to navigate their way around the practice's systems will pay dividends.
