Kat Bazeley spent nine years (up until 1993) in Vanuatu and Indonesia, working for Britain's Overseas Development Administration (now the Department for International Development [DFID]). She was principal author of a DFID report on human development and animal welfare, and coauthor of an FAO programme for training paraveterinarians. Subsequently a lecturer in farm animal medicine at the University of Bristol, she now works in farm animal practice in south Somerset.
Abstract
THIS series gives readers the opportunity to consider and contribute to the discussion of some of the ethical dilemmas that can arise in veterinary practice. Each month, a case scenario is presented, followed by discussion of some of the issues involved. In addition, a possible way forward is suggested; however, there is rarely a cut‐and‐dried answer in such cases, and readers may wish to suggest an alternative approach. Readers with comments to contribute on this month's dilemma, entitled ‘Charitable aspirations’, are invited to send them as soon as possible, so that they can be considered for publication in the next issue. A response to the ‘Injured greyhound’ dilemma, which was published last month, appears on page 177. The series is being coordinated by Siobhan Mullan, of the University of Bristol. It is hoped it will provide a framework that will help practices find solutions when facing similar dilemmas. This month's dilemma is presented and discussed by Kat Bazeley.
