Brucellosis is a worldwide zoonotic disease that can be associated with significant economic and welfare problems in livestock. There are currently 10 reported species of Brucella, which have an affinity for different hosts and vary in pathogenicity and zoonotic potential. This article discusses the effect of Brucella infection on cattle and other animals, the diagnostic methods employed to detect the disease, and the surveillance measures undertaken to ensure Great Britain remains brucellosis free.
