Diabetes mellitus in dogs
  1. Lucy Davison

Abstract

Canine diabetes mellitus is commonly diagnosed in first-opinion practice. Some cases are more challenging to manage than others, particularly when concurrent conditions such as pancreatitis are present. This article describes a basic approach to the diagnosis and management of diabetes in dogs, including recognition and treatment of complications such as hypoglycaemia and diabetic ketoacidosis. Techniques for monitoring diabetic patients are discussed and an approach to the unstable diabetic patient is outlined.
